Volunteer Opportunities 11-13-09

Here at the United Way we have one week left of our 2009-2010 Campaign. We are looking to fall a little short this year, which we haven't done in a very long time. It is important that we reach our goal so that amazing programs that benefit so many in the community do not get cut. If you want to know how you can help, please contact Ashley (Ashley@uw.lafayette.in.us)! :0) YOU can help make the difference in this community!

Speaking of helping the community, here are this week's volunteer opportunities. You know the drill, contact me if you are interested in any of the following (samantha@uw.lafayette.in.us)! Have a great weekend!

The Volunteer Center is seeking volunteers to read for the IRIS program! IRIS is a service for the blind and others who are unable to read conventional print material. Volunteers are needed to read and record sections of the local paper on a regular basis. Readings can be done from home or anywhere that is quiet and comfortable that has phone access.

Westminster Village is seeking warmhearted individuals to read to residents. Volunteers should be comfortable reading to small groups. Additionally, readers must be able to speak clearly and enunciate well. A 1 hour per week commitment for the duration of 6 months is preferable.

The Wildcat Creek Wildlife Center in Delphi, Ind. is looking for volunteers who can work 4 hours week to help with the following: baby feeders, animal care, maintenance, rescue, clerical, data entry, phones, grant writer, and accountant.

The Tippecanoe County Public Library is in need of Library Link volunteers. They are matched with homebound patrons with similar reading interests. Volunteers select, deliver, and retrieve library materials monthly. Training is provided. Volunteers are needed for 2 hours per month. Visits are made monthly.

Circle of Friends (which offers creative programs for people with memory loss) needs help revitalizing & enhancing its website. After a preliminary meeting the project can be worked on independently. Initial improvements desired by December 31st. Ongoing web assistance would be appreciated but not required.

The Imagination Station is seeking volunteers to assist with programming on Saturdays. Imagination Station is open on Saturdays from 9:00am-2:00pm and volunteers are asked to help for 3 hours, but any amount of time is appreciated! Volunteers would be engaging with children and their parents participating in science related activities and crafts. Science background is not required, everyone is welcome!

The Riggs Community Health Center is in search of 3 or 4 volunteers to assist with the Baby Corner Program. Volunteers are needed to staff the store one Wednesday of each month from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. in addition to re-stocking the store and monitoring inventory after the store closes on Wednesdays from 3-3:30 p.m. A minimum commitment of six months is required.

Mid-Land Meals needs volunteers to package meals for senior citizens. They accept volunteers on a daily basis and have two volunteer days for the holiday meals: November 21st 9 am – 2 pm and December 5th 9 am-2 pm.
