Volunteer 1/8/2010

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope everyone had a great holiday season. I know the column is going out one day early. But it’s that time of year again….the snow has arrived and some people in the community need your help! We are looking for anyone who would be interested in shoveling driveways and sidewalks (remember…it’s good exercise if that is your new year’s resolution). If you are interested, contact me and I can give you more details.

Regency Place is making changes and is in need of volunteers! They will be opening a gift shop. They are looking to have it open for 4 hours a week total. Volunteers could split up the shifts to 2 hours. They would also like volunteers to provide workshops i.e.- educational lectures, teaching, crafts, woodworking, painting, starting a Regency Choir , etc.). Volunteers must be willing to dedicate their time on a regular basis, 1 time a week or in some cases 1 time a month.

The Wildcat Creek Wildlife Center in Delphi, Ind. is looking for volunteers who can give 4hrs. a week to help with the following: baby feeders, animal care, maintenance, cage building and repair, clerical, rescue, data entry, phones, or grant writing. The Art Museum would like to assemble a team of volunteers who would enjoy learning about our exhibitions and permanent collection, helping visitors and monitoring the art galleries. Exhibitions are January 22-March 20. Training needs to be completed on January 25, at 10:30 AM at the Art Museum. If you are unable to attend this training, an alternate training time will be scheduled. Greet museum visitors at the information and security desk at the entrance to the East Gallery, answer questions and keep an eye on the galleries. Gallery Hours are 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday. Volunteer schedules will vary.

Lafayette Transitional Housing Center is in dire need of volunteers to help with data entry and sorting donations.

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is looking for committed volunteers to assist with planning our 2010 event. As a member of the committee you will have the opportunity to fight back against cancer, work with a fun group of people, and help plan one of Tippecanoe County's largest events. Volunteers are needed to assist in many areas of the committee including Team Development, Promotions, Advocacy, Mission, and many other types of activities.

The YWCA is having a call out on January 20th at 6pm to recruit new volunteers. They utilize volunteers in different capacities depending on departments. Some opportunities may include: office help with filing and mailers, answering office phones, answering the crisis line, or helping with children’s programming. They are looking for men and women ages 18 and older, who have time to give and would be interested in learning new skills, getting domestic violence education, and working with women and children.

The Lafayette Crisis Center is seeking new volunteers. They are a non-profit 24/7 Crisis/I&R hotline that provides a wide range of services to our community. Training is provided so no experience is necessary! Training begins soon, contact for more details.

Volunteers Needed!!! 11-6-09

We have quite a few new volunteer opportunities this week! There is so much to get involved in during this time of year. If you are interested in any of the following opportunities, contact me at samantha@uwlafayette.in.us! I look forward to hearing from you! :)



Westminster Village
is seeking warmhearted individuals to read to residents. Volunteers should be comfortable reading to small groups. Additionally, readers must be able to speak clearly and enunciate well. A 1 hour per week commitment for the duration of 6 months is preferable.


The Wildcat Creek Wildlife Center in Delphi, Ind. is looking for volunteers who can work 4 hours week to help with the following: baby feeders, animal care, maintenance, rescue, clerical, data entry, phones, grant writer, and accountant.


The Tippecanoe County Public Library is in need of Library Link volunteers. They are matched with homebound patrons with similar reading interests. Volunteers select, deliver, and retrieve library materials monthly. Training is provided. Volunteers are needed for 2 hours per month. Visits are made monthly.


Circle of Friends (which offers creative programs for people with memory loss) needs help revitalizing & enhancing its website. After a preliminary meeting the project can be worked on independently. Initial improvements desired by December 31st. Ongoing web assistance would be appreciated but not required.


The Imagination Station is seeking volunteers to assist with programming on Saturdays. Imagination Station is open on Saturdays from 9:00am-2:00pm and volunteers are asked to help for 3 hours, but any amount of time is appreciated! Volunteers would be engaging with children and their parents participating in science related activities and crafts. Science background is not required, everyone is welcome!


The Riggs Community Health Center is in search of 3 or 4 volunteers to assist with the Baby Corner Program. Volunteers are needed to staff the store one Wednesday of each month from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. in addition to re-stocking the store and monitoring inventory after the store closes on Wednesdays from 3-3:30 p.m. A minimum commitment of six months is required.


Mid-Land Meals needs volunteers to package meals for senior citizens. They accept volunteers on a daily basis and have two volunteer days for the holiday meals: November 21st 9 am – 2 pm and December 5th 9 am-2 pm.


Your help is needed in the fight against hunger in our community! Food Finders is seeking volunteers to sort food items, donated from local merchants. Morning and afternoon shifts available. This would be a great opportunity for groups or organizations, as well as individuals.

Volunteers Needed!!! 10-9-2009

I love the changing leaves but it seems like it's NOVEMBER, it's getting chilly outside! I hope that everyone has had a nice week. Here are this week's volunteer opportunities. The Volunteer Center is looking for volunteers to help a disabled community member move from on place to another in town. A truck would be helpful. They are looking to move as soon as possible.


American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 2nd Annual 5K Walk is looking for volunteers to help us before, during and after the event. Date: Saturday October 10 2009 at Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) from 9:00am to 1:00.


The AmeriCorps GrowIndiana program through Ivy Tech Community College is recruiting math tutors for 7th & 8th grade students. Must be proficient in basic algebra and a background check will be conducted. Hours of tutoring are between 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday-Friday.


Lafayette Urban Ministry is in need of volunteer case managers to help our shelter guests become self sufficient. Volunteers would follow up on goals set by the guests and myself. Volunteers are needed from 10:00 a.m. - noon and 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Volunteers do not need to be available all day. Just a few hours a week and become volunteer on a regular weekly schedule.


Volunteers are needed for the CRYPT of TERROR Haunted House on Oct. 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24 & Oct 30 from 6pm-11pm each day. They are in need of role players, ticket takers, escorts etc.


Wabash Center is seeking volunteers for its newest division, Tippecanoe Adult Guardianship Services, which provides assistance to incapacitated adults who need someone to assist them accessing care and social services. Training begins Monday, October 19, from 5:30 pm to 9 pm, and continues every Monday & Wednesday for five weeks


Volunteers are needed for setting up and making props, for a Haunted House called the “Crypt of Terror.” Adults are needed to help every Friday from 9/11/09 thru 10/09/09 during the day. Homestead Consulting Services and Jefferson High School Choral Department are partnering together to host a Haunted House at Market Square in the old Stein Mart building. Even if you can only volunteer part of a day or several days it would be much appreciated. No skills are necessary.

Volunteer Opportunities 10-2-2009

Happy Fall Everyone!!! :) Ahh, this is one of my favorite seasons. With all of the leaves changing colors, football is back (BOILER UP!), the weather is perfect (on most days), school is back in session and there are a lot of things going on in the community! Lafayette Urban Ministry is in need of volunteer case managers to help our shelter guests become self sufficient. Volunteers would follow up on goals set by the guests and myself. Volunteers are needed from 10:00 a.m. - noon and 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Volunteers do not need to be available all day. Just a few hours a week and become volunteer on a regular weekly schedule.

Want to make a difference in only 4 hours a month? Mental Health America is looking for volunteers to spend time with an individual recovering from a mental health challenge. Training and support is provided. Volunteers 30 and over are especially encouraged to apply!
